Windows 7 enters a brave, new buying world
More than 14 years ago, Microsoft Corp. extended its foray into graphical user interface-based operating systems with the introduction of Windows 95, a major leap over earlier Windows products that introduced the world to the concept and utility of the iconic ‘Start’ button.
Microsoft spared no expense in the glitzy rollout at its Redmond, WA headquarters, licensing The Rolling Stones’ Start Me Up as an expensive and catchy theme song, and hiring talk show star Jay Leno to deliver a technology-laced shtick and then stick around later to play video games on the new platform. Windows 95 was an immediate success and became the most successful OS Microsoft ever produced. The introduction was followed by Windows 98, countless other updates, and the less-than-stellar entry of Microsoft Vista.
Today, as Microsoft takes the wraps off a whole new Windows 7, The Rolling Stones and Jay Leno are still kicking around, although consumers and the buying public are perhaps a bit more skeptical when it comes to software revolutions and revamps. It takes a lot more to ‘start up’ a new wave and generate a positive buzz.
In creating this special section dedicated to Win 7, TechnologyGuide.com will help consumers keep a better eye on that buy by providing the latest news, hands-on reviews and useful updates as the operating system moves beyond the hype and into the hands of consumers. Stick with us as we jump through a new window and leave no (rolling) stone unturned. It should be an interesting trip!
