Face it: art filters make photographs more fun. So-called purists may disagree, but deciding on which creative special effects to add to ordinary photographs can be an addictive process. And since Olympus has recently come to be known as the champion of the art filter, DigitalCameraReview has put together a quick guide for those Olympus PEN series owners that want to make the most of the feature.
First, DCR recommends shooting in Raw + JPEG mode and saving both file types when utilizing the filters. Yes, this will take up more hard drive space, and yes, Raw (or, unfiltered) files require additional steps and software to be accessed, but the added processing used by JPEG files isn’t going to mean much when all of life’s precious moments can’t be seen in their original glory. Art filters are great fun, but it never hurts to have plain old shots handy alongside them.
For inspiration purposes, art filtering photogs should be browsing through photo sharing sites like Flickr whenever they’re looking for a new idea or some helpful tips. With certain PEN cameras, additional layers and effects can be added on top of the original filters, and of course manual adjustments can always be made in art filter mode too. All of this should be taken advantage of to get the artsiest shot possible, but to get even more tips, be sure to check out DigitalCameraReview’s complete How To guide for getting the most out of a camera\’s art filters.
