Despite there being a continued lack of employee desktop and laptop control in workplaces across the country, the vast majority of companies\’ IT professionals are in favor of lessening user admin capabilities on corporate computers, a new survey from Windows privilege management firm Avecto reveals.
The survey, which was composed at the McAfee Focus 2012 security conference in October, states that a whopping 84 percent of IT pro respondents think that their respective organizations are in need of curtailing user privileges on company machines. Not surprisingly, 45 percent of those respondents cite protecting users from the threat of increasingly complicated malware attacks as the primary reason for greater computer control. 18 percent cited the need to combat insider threats, while 9 percent attributed it to \”external compliance.\”
Yet, there appears to be a discrepancy between these professionals\’ desires and the actual happenings of their organizations. That\’s because almost 40 percent of those surveyed said that more than half of the workers at their companies had privileged accounts, while another 5 percent weren\’t even sure of the extent of privileged accounts in their workplaces.
The survey also makes note of the increasingly prevalent BYOD trend — aka the consumerization of IT — by reporting that 22 percent of the represented companies currently don\’t have a BYOD policy in place. Only 17 percent reported limitations on employees\’ ability to use their own tablets and phones in the workplace, 27 percent reported full permission for user-owned devices, and just 12 percent reported workers not being able to use personal devices at all.
It\’s worth noting that Avecto would theoretically benefit from the results of its own survey, as it touts its work as \”helping organizations to deploy secure and compliant desktops and servers.\” Nevertheless, the report indicates a growing disconnect between companies and IT professionals — with the fate of various employee privileges possibly hanging in the balance.
