Steve Jobs was once quoted as having said, “We don’t think you can make a great tablet with a 7-inch screen.” Apparently, he was either kidding, sorely mistaken, or a .85-inches off. The answer to that question will very likely be answered very soon. The rumor mill is spinning furiously, and it’s all but official that Apple is presently poising to unveil their latest invention, the iPad Mini. And if some of the buzz we’re hearing is accurate, it could be another enormous holiday season for Apple.
Announcement Date of October 17, Release Date of November 2
When will it go? Nobody knows. But there are some who are prognosticating that those sneaky Apple folks just might be toying with the idea of springing the iPad Mini on us at the same time they release iTunes 11, while is scheduled for “sometime” this month. Others have said that even an announcement of the iPad Mini in October is a bit optimistic and premature.
On October 10, Apple is expected to begin sending out invitations to yet another hush-hush unveiling event that will probably occur a week later, on October 17. A date of November 2 has been floated around as a possible release date, which would leave plenty of time for the iPad Mini to make it onto millions of people’s Christmas lists.
10 Million iPad Minis are On Their Way
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has ordered a whopping 10 million units of the iPad Mini for distribution in the fourth quarter of 2012. If this particular rumor is true, this means three things: they’re expecting people to go bonkers for it (a safe enough bet on Apple’s part); they want to get the iPad Mini out for the Christmas shopping season (a smart move); and the announcement of an official release date is imminent (a given, considering the remaining days of 2012 can now be counted in weeks). Back in August, TabletPCReview reported on rumors that Apple had kicked operation of the iPad Mini into full swing, which may yet prove true.
A 7.85-inch Screen and No Retina Display
Whether Apple decided to go with a slightly larger screen for aesthetic purposes or to just keep Jobs honest on his anti-7-inch proclamation is unknown. What is known – what’s rumored, anyway – is that the new iPad Mini will have a smaller, 7.85-inch screen, something TPCR reported on in July. In September, TPCR ran another article that featured a leaked photo of a supposed iPad Mini that also indicated it’ll have a lower resolution than the current crop of iPads out there: 1024 x 768. This also means there’ll likely be no Retina Display, one of the chief selling points of the latest generation iPad.
A $299 to $350 Price Tag
Some rumors have the cost of the rumored iPad Mini at anywhere from $299 apiece to $350, depending on internal memory – a 16GB model would likely go for the smaller price, and a 32GB model would fetch the higher sum. If this is the case, it’s still not going to be exactly dirt cheap, but the lower cost might be enough to entice iPad holdouts into spending the money they decided to hold onto while they went in search of something that qualifies as “affordable.”
It Will Run iOS 6
This is another one of those rumors that falls into the “probably a given” category. Apple’s iOS 6, as TPCR reported, has served to improve the iPad use and productivity experience dramatically, in a broad range of areas – from mail functionality to Safari browsing to FaceTime – and it only makes sense that a miniaturized iteration of the iPad would also include it.
