Dish Network has launched Social, the newest in a line of apps for its Dish Hopper Home DVR, which expands users’ ability to interact with their social media followers while watching television.
The Social app is a set-top box application, which provides users with social feeds relevant to whatever content they are currently watching by integrating their Twitter and Facebook profiles into the Hopper service. The Social app can be accessed via the “quick launch” bar on the Hopper and customers can link up to four Twitter and four Facebook accounts to the device.
Once linked, users will have three different options for viewing social content. A user can select “Now Watching,” which displays the Twitter feed relevant to the show or channel the user is watching at that time. Users can also opt for “My Twitter,” which gives them full Twitter functionality on the television, or “My Facebook,” which allows users to view their Facebook feed and post status updates.
Additionally, the app will display a status bar at the bottom of the screen with high level statistics from Twitter, including information on where the show is being Tweeted about most, the program’s sentiment rating, percentage of Tweeters by gender and frequency of Tweets.
