Smartwatches may be the next battleground in the tech industry, with rivals like Google, LG, Microsoft, Samsung and Apple all reportedly interested in taking on current wearable champs like Pebble and Sony. With the devices poised to become hot commodities, electronic paper maker E Ink is looking to set itself up for success in the growing scene by announcing its new, 1.73-inch Mobius display tech.
According to E Ink, the display has been “specifically engineered for smartwatch and watch applications,” and will first roll out with the Sonostar Smartwatch, which was revealed at Computex 2013 this week.
Its 320 x 240 resolution display won’t wow users with vibrant colors, because there aren’t any; instead, the Mobius screen offers 16 levels of greyscale and is designed to take up less power and be readable in sunlight.
E Ink hasn’t announced any partnerships with OEMs beyond Sonostar for now, but given the continued apparent interest in the wearable game, it wouldn’t be surprising to see similar technology rear its head in the future.
