We may have to wait until May 21 to hear about the latest Xbox, which will likely include major home theater integration, but a report from The Wall Street Journal suggests the company is working on developing a stand-alone set-top box similar to the Apple TV and Roku.
The report claims that Microsoft is attempting to streamline the user experience across multiple Windows devices, something Apple has done with its products. Sources say Microsoft is pushing code to its developers to write programs that will work with smartphones, tablets, and PCs running Windows. Maybe TV is next, and the company has also dedicated recent efforts to improving its entertainment offerings in terms of streaming content.
A set top box from Microsoft will most likely retail for less than their rumored forthcoming Xbox console. However, there is no official word on price, or if the set-top box will even make it out of the development stages. Set-top boxes have been cropping up in the news lately with Amazon reportedly releasing one in the fall and the recent release of the Roku 3.
