Nintendo opted out of a physical press conference at E3 this year, leaving that for Sony and its Playstation 4, and Microsoft\’s Xbox One. The Japanese company instead broadcast its announcements via a Nintendo Direct live stream. The company\’s president, Satoru Iwata, announced a slew of new games, which mostly consisted of old favorites with revamped HD graphics and added features.
Super Smash Bros.
A popular game on the Nintedo 64, Gamecube and original Wii, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will offer a multiplayer battle experience featuring characters from various games. Characters will include Star Fox, Kirby, Pikachu, Link from Zelda, Mario, Luigi, Samus Aran from Metroid, and the newly-added Mega Man. It will be available for Wii U and 3DS some time in 2014.
Mario Kart 8
The familiar Mario Kart title will be updated with HD graphics and 3D features, allowing gamers to drive cars upside down and along the sides of walls. Nintendo alluded to a multiplayer aspect by stating the game will work with Miiverse, but did not confirm if that meant allowing players to connect online. Mario Kart 8 will ship in the spring of 2014.
Super Mario 3D World
Originally released for the Nintendo 3DS as Super Mario 3D Land, Nintendo announced that a new version dubbed Super Mario 3D World will be available for the Wii U. It will include most elements of Super Mario 3D Land, but will incorporate a 4-player mode, HD graphics, and a new cat power up for the characters. Users will be able to play simultaneously as either Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach, with each character bringing specific attributes to the table. Super Mario 3D World will be released for Wii U later this year.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
The classic title Donkey Kong will receive a major overhaul with HD graphics and the option to play as Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Dixie Kong. It will be released for Wii U later this year.
Pokemon X and Y
A new release of Pokemon was announced, along with a new Fariy Pokemon and a feature called Pokemon Amie, which lets users bond with their Pokemon through interactive caring. The game will be available starting October 12.
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
The latest Zelda title will feature HD graphics and better character expression, thanks to the improved quality. Other details were not released other than the added ability to speed up while using the boat in the game. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker will be released for Wii U in October.
Nintendo spent some time introducing Bayonetta 2 during its live stream, mostly noting that she will sport a new look and haircut. The game will be available sometime in 2014.
Wii U Party and Wii U Fit
Nintendo confirmed that Wii U Party, originally slated for release this summer, will be delayed until October. Wii U Fit, which had a vague release date of sometime in the second half of 2013, will be pushed out until the winter.
