Microsoft today announced that its SkyDrive cloud storage service now lets users edit shared Office documents in Office Web Apps, even if they do not have a Microsoft account. Previously, documents could only be edited by registered SkyDrive users, but now users can allow their non-member buds to tinker with them through a link in the “Share” tab within any Office doc. Microsoft said in a blog post that it made the change after consistent requests, “especially from students.”
Microsoft also announced today that SkyDrive is now storing over a billion Office documents on its servers. The cloud service has steadily grown since its debut in 2007, but has picked up the pace recently due to its increased integration into mobile devices, the Xbox 360, and the latest iteration of Microsoft Office, which launched late last month.
