Sonos has released a new product that will attempt to change the way consumers listen to television. The Sonos Playbar is a wireless HiFi system that connects to a user’s TV to bring high-quality sound into the living room. The wireless compatibility also allows the Playbar to stream music from online outlets like Pandora or Spotify.

The device connects to the TV via an optical cable, and will play any sound coming from the television, including cable, Blu-ray players, and gaming consoles. The Playbar features nine speakers – six mid-woofers and three tweeters. The volume can be adjusted or muted with a regular television remote or via a downloadable app available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, or PC.

According to the company, which is known for manufacturing wireless audio systems, the Playbar also features a “Night Sound” mode aimed at late night movie watchers. While in “Night Sound” mode, the Playbar will soften alarming audio, such as bangs and crashes, while boosting the sounds of soft speaking characters for the ideal late-night movie watching experience.

The Playbar is priced at $699 USD at the time of this writing and is available for pre-order. The system will be available in stores on March 5.
