With increased competition from services like Pandora, GrooveShark, and the recently-released Twitter Music and Google Play Music: All Access, Spotify has added a new “Discover” feature in an attempt to stay ahead of the pack.
The Discover feature integrates music suggestions from the experts behind apps such as Pitchfork, Songkick and Tunigo to recommend music to users based on artists they follow and music they listen to. Spotify touts new personalized recommendations every day and will hand out instant recommendations as soon as a user plays a song.
The Discover page is laid out in large tiles with an image, song title, artist name and a paragraph with more information on the song or the artist. Users can follow new artists straight from the Discover page. Additionally, the service includes an Audio Preview feature, which allows users to click and hold over any play button on the Discover page to hear a quick snippet of the song. Users can choose to switch to that song, or Spotify will automatically revert back to playing the song a user was previously listening to when they move the mouse.
Available to everyone on the Web player today, Spotify says the Discover feature will gradually roll out to the desktop and mobile apps.
