Square, the company best known for its Square Credit Card reader, has announced Square Stand for the iPad. It will turn an iPad into a small register with credit card reader and, for an extra price, users will be able to purchase a compatible cash drawer, bar code scanner, receipt printer, and kitchen printer to create a full register system.
Users will be able to fix the stand in place on a counter top and the iPad mount will let users tilt or rotate the device. The added functionality as a full register could bring in bigger businesses as customers, rather than the smaller businesses and individuals that currently make up the most of Square\’s customer base.
The company states it decided to start creating accessories for the iPad, rather than other tablets, since nearly half of the transactions made through Square are via an iPad. Currently, the stand fits the iPad 2 and 3, but a version for the iPad 4 with Lightning connector will be released later this year.
Each year, not including select Starbucks locations, Square processes over $15 billion worth of payments. Square has also recently brought on new talent including executives from PayPal and Google as they move to create more products for consumers.
The Square Stand costs $299 and will ship July 8 to Best Buy and other retailers, but customers can pre-order stand via the company’s website.
