TiVo has announced support for iOS streaming with its latest line up of TiVo Roamio set-top boxes, giving users access to their content on the go.
The TiVo Roamio Pro and Roamio Plus now let users stream and download content from their DVR to their iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. With the TiVo iOS app, users will be able to download and stream content over Wi-Fi, but there is currently no support for streaming over a data connection.
Users will not only be able to stream content stored on a Roamio set-top box, they will also be able to download content via the app for offline viewing. However, some content providers have blocked the ability to download their programming. TiVo has not released the list of providers that have blocked the streaming and download feature, but users will see a red slash through any content that is copyright protected in this way. In addition to downloading and streaming content, the iOS app also allows users to manage, schedule, and view recordings on their DVR.
The entry level TiVo Roamio requires a separate TiVo Stream for remote streaming, and users that already have a TiVo Stream can expect compatibility starting next month.
The lineup of Roamio DVR series includes the TiVo Roamio for $199, the TiVo Romaio Plus for $399.99, and TiVo Roamio Pro for $599.99. Each model includes anywhere from four to six tuners and 75 to 450 hours of HD storage.
The app is currently only available for iOS users running iOS 5.1 or later, and it only allows for streaming to one device at a time. TiVo plans to add support for Android as well as streaming over 4G LTE sometime next year.
