Quick Take

The HL-5470dw is a low cost, reliable option designed to help boost productivity in your office.

The Brother HL-5470dw is no-frills, single function monochrome laser printer aimed at pleasing small office environments at an affordable price. Available for just $249.99 at the time of review, the HL-5470dw sports print speeds up to 40 pages per minute, print resolution up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, automatic duplexing, and a 400 MHz processor with 128MB of memory, among other features.

\"\"The HL-5470dw is built similarly to its older brother, the Brother HL-6180dw, with the only difference being the latter\’s extended paper tray (the 5470-dw\’s is 250 pages with a 50-sheet multipurpose tray). It\’s a black, boxy, yet durable machine, only featuring standard quick keys, LCD lights, and a 1-line backlit LCD display. No touchscreens or front side USBs are to be found here, but then again you get what you pay for.

As you\’d expect with a relatively simplistic machine like this, the HL-5470dw puts users through an uncomplicated installation and is quite easy to use. And as PrinterComparison notes in its review, the HL-5470dw\’s primary goal is \”print quickly, reliably and efficiently.\” Thankfully, the machine does just that, as PC reports it pumping out an 80-page black and white text document in just over two minutes, with the first page finished in around eight seconds. Duplexing speeds were not as impressive, but were still quick enough to get a 40-page document out in about two minutes at an 11 ppm clip (22 pages double-sided). A toner saver mode is available for those who want to save ink, and PC reported no paper jams during its time with the device either.

All in all, purchasing the Brother HL-5470dw is going to be a matter of how important basic printing necessities and an affordable cost are to your (or your company\’s) needs. As PC recalls, this is a \”fairly one-dimensional\” machine — it\’ll boost productivity by printing high-quality black and white texts at a good rate. Those expecting the usual bells and whistles seen in other, more expensive printers — like color printing or USB ports — will be disappointed, but that doesn\’t stop the HL-5470dw from being a solid option.
