Quick TakeThe Brother MFC-J4510dw Business Smart Inkjet All-in-One is an excellent step forward for Brother in the SOHO/SMB market.
The Brother MFC-J4510dw is the first printer from the company’s new Business Smart Series and is geared toward small businesses, workgroups and home offices. The printer, which is priced at $199 at the time of the review, features a 3.7-inch swipe touchscreen display and TouchPanel, connected apps, 8.5 x 11.7-inch scanner and a 20 sheet ADF for scanning, copying or faxing multi-page documents. The device has average print speeds of 20 pages per minute in black and 18 ppm in color, with a fast mode option that produces 27 ppm.
The printer is 19 x 11 x 7-inches in non-use and weighs 20 pounds without consumables. It has a built in memory card reader and front side USB port and a 150-sheet paper tray. PrinterComparison praised the device’s front loading ink system as “easy-to-use” and noted the printer’s ability to produce documents up to 11 x 17 in size. The MFC-J4510dw comes with four LC103 ink cartridges and offers high and super high yield ink replacements. The printer also has the ability to print double-sided automatically. When printing photos, PC found the average speed to be 20 seconds for a 4×6 and noted good color quality. However, PC did note that the device was very loud while printing.
PC found the MFC-J4510dw to have a “fairly simple setup,” and noted that the touchscreen was easy to navigate. PC was impressed with the printer’s six web-connected apps (Flickr, Picasa, Google Docs, Facebook, Evernote and Dropbox), which allows users to print directly from the applications, as well as scan files into the apps. The printer includes MFL Pro Suite with Control Center 4, which has basic scan, photo, PC Copy and PC fax software. PC noted the scanning software was basic and did not have auto image scanning capabilities and found the scan quality to be poor when scanning color documents. However, PC noted the photo and fax software to be of good quality. Reviewers at PC experienced one paper jam during the review process when using higher quality paper (24 lb.).
Overall, PC found the Brother MFC-J4510dw to be a printer worth considering with its compact design yet fast printing speeds and improved photo print quality but noted that users should be aware of the loud noise the device makes while printing and the poor scan quality with color images. However, PC found a decent cost per-page and positive attributes in the 3.7-inch swipe touchscreen and web-connected applications.
