Quick Take

The Pixma Pro-1 might not be the cheapest wide format printer, but the print quality is outstanding.

The Canon Pixma Pro-1 Professional Inkjet Printer is an A3+ photo printer (wide format printer) with an advertised print resolution of up to 4800×2400 dpi. This is a high end printer will be a hit with professional photographers who want to print their own quality photographs.

\"CanonCanon released this printer with an updated front loading ink system that holds 36 ML ink tanks, which PrinterComparison notes this is 2.5 times bigger than ink tanks in previous models. The Canon Pixma Pro-1 has 12 motionless tanks loaded with Lucia pigment inks.  Using a tubular ink delivery system, the machine draws ink from the tanks when printing. You may experience a slight delay in starting print jobs due to this more intricate ink setup; however, the quality of photos makes it worth the wait.

If you are planning on storing this printer in a small space, you may have to make some room for this printer.  The Pixma Pro-1\’s profile is large in order to accommodate its A3+ printing capabilities. Another frustrating limitation that PC points out is that this printer lacks built in Wi-Fi to connect to a network. This means you will need to place the printer close to your computer, which might be inconvenient due to the size of the machine. Although the printer is large, it features very basic controls on the outside, keeping it simple and allowing users to control settings via their computer.

Many printers come with an included editing and layout software to set up print jobs.  ThePixma Pro-1 retails for nearly $1000, at the time of review, meaning it appeals towards professionals who are more likely to use Adobe Photoshop to achieve the editing and layout they desire.

The Canon Pixma Pro-1 advertises speeds less than 3 minutes when printing an 11×14-inch image and 4 minutes and 20 seconds for a 13×19-inch image. Testers at PC found speeds varied based on the color density of the photograph being printed. With high density color photos, reviewers recorded speeds of 7 minutes when printing a color 13×19-inch image on high quality mode.

The Pixma Pro-1 has a useful setting called \”Printer Manages Color\”, which analyzes the photo on screen and prints a photo that matches closely to the colors shown on screen. This could eliminate the amounts of edits needed for a photo after printing, since the color will match the screen, allowing you to save on paper and ink.

PC states that the Canon Pixma Pro-1 is \”easy to use, retains detail in highlights and shadows, prints reasonably quickly, and makes it easy to get accurate colors. The Pro-1 does all of these things and does them exceptionally well.\’ If you are in the market for a professional grade photo printer, the Canon Pixma Pro-1 would be an excellent choice.
