Times are tough right now, but shopping for the gadget lover in your life can still be affordable if you know where to look – and what to look for. If you only have $50 to spend but don't want to skimp on features, you'll have the best luck finding low-cost, feature-rich devices in printers and smartphones. There are some surprisingly capable entry-level digital cameras available around the $100 mark, and for the first time, many consumer DSLRs are hovering around the $500 threshold. We've seen new budget options in laptops as well, with the netbook craze bringing some excellent machines from respected manufacturers to market for as little as $350.

At the other end of the spectrum, high-school or college graduation is also a great time to consider a long-term investment with the purchase of a notebook or desktop. In this case, buying a slightly more expensive system that is built to last and will meet your graduate's needs well into the future usually saves money in the long run. And with retailers doing everything in their power to convince consumers to make a major purchase this year, now is also an excellent time to do a little bargain hunting with more expensive configurations.
