Quick Take

We can't say $200 is a bargain, but Audiofly's AE78 headphones will match and exceed just about anything else in their price range.

While a $200 price tag at the time of the review puts the Audiofly AE78 headphones in the “high-end” category, DesktopReview is convinced there is no better option for the price. With a hybrid dual-driver system that offers well-defined lows without distorting the mid and high sound ranges, DR said the AE78 model “will match or exceed everything in that price range.”

\"AudioflyThe AE78 headphones also come with a range of accessories including a full set of silicone and Comply comfort foam eartips, a headphone splitter, a dual-jack for use with airplane audio systems and a cleaning brush. DR noted the headphone’s distinctive design and shape, including a checkered nylon cord, which is reinforced with Kevlar for added strength. DR noted that there have been complaints regarding the microphonics of the headphone cable, which are mechanical vibrations that run through the cord and cause a rustling sound. DR found it wasn’t any worse than other pairs of in-ear headphone with substantial physical noise reduction, but wouldn’t recommend wearing them to the gym or while running without a clip to secure them to a shirt. Despite the microphonics of the headphone cable, DR said the AE78 model “offers some of the best sound quality we’ve heard in an in-ear headphone.”

Overall, DR found users “aren’t going to find a better quality headphone for the price,” and noted the quality of sound across the entire frequency range. DR was impressed with the sound reproduction, comfort and style of the headphones and the included accessories, but noted the price and slightly microphonic cord as possible drawbacks. In the end, DR found the Audiofly AE78 headphones are a “solid buy for any mobile music lover.”
